My summer as an intern in New York City has come and gone, and I'm here to share all the wisdom and random hacks I picked up after living in the Big Apple for 10 weeks! If you're new to the blog, I interned with an event design group, Patrick J Clayton Productions, this summer and had the most incredible experience living in NYC. Whether you're interested in visiting or living in NYC or just want to read some fun content, I'm happy you're here, and keep reading!
A GUIDE TO BEING AN INTERN IN NYC
- Fly Southwest: you get two 50lb checked bags free and a carryon and purse, so you can stuff most of your life into that luggage and buy toiletries and groceries when you land.
- The city really isn’t all that sketchy, because everywhere you go there are tons of people out!
- I couldn’t survive without my iPhone Maps app; I use it everywhere I go to know which subways to take by clicking “transit” in the app
- Frose. That’s it. That’s the bullet point.
- I’ve found that wearing headphones around the sidewalks helps me better avoid getting solicited or catcalled
- You’ll need a monthly metrocard ($130) to get around on the subway
- Pedestrians kind of rule traffic; everyone walks and crosses streets whenever they want as long as a car isn’t about to hit them (sometimes even then)
- Laundry is expensive (!!!) so maybe re-wear your clothes more than you normally would
- Don’t be overly ambitious in planning your weekend activities; you will get exhausted from all the walking and subway rides!
- Duane Reade is a fancy name for Walgreens in the city, which is where I recommend picking up medicine and $5 wine
- If you’re a (pretty?) girl, club promoters might reach out to you … it’s an easy way to get free food and drinks
- Take the hour-long subway ride to Coney Island and enjoy the beach at sunset
- Tourists will start seeing you as a New Yorker and asking you for help and it feels. so. legit. *insert sunglasses face emoji*
- Subway hack: walk all the way down one of the ends of the station and you’ll get a less crowded car since everyone will be grouped in the middle
- If you don’t feel like hauling groceries through the streets, try out Amazon Fresh - it offers a free 30 day trial and delivers your groceries right to your door!
- Find quality roommates; I did and they made my summer the best one of my life :')
- Make a bucket list and start crossing things off - time F L I E S when you’re having fun!
XOXO - Talia
